Case Study: Athens, GA
History
The Certificate of Need (CON) for a new surgery center was owned by an ASC management company that had been unsuccessful at attempts to create a partnership with local physicians. Time was running out, with just 4 months left before the Certificate of Need would expire. Construction was underway but millions of dollars were at risk if a partnership was not established. ASCOA was contacted in hopes that they would be able to make this center a reality.
ASCOA
ASCOA purchased the CON and set to work recruiting. Within a month, the five busiest physicians in town were on board. ASCOA successfully assumed management of the center’s construction with an aggressive completion deadline and strict guidelines from the state health department.
The multi-specialty, 4 OR surgery center opened in January 2012. State and Medicare licensure was obtained soon after, and the center began serving patients in Orthopedics, General Surgery and Otolaryngology.
Outcome
The partners received their first distribution of profits just three months after the Center received its Medicare license. Distributions have continued on a regular basis during the first year of operations.
